It was a journey I had been planning in my mind for several years and my experience was every bit as enjoyable as I could have hoped. The House of Illustration Competition

The focus of this year's competition is the fantastic book, 'The Bloody Chamber' by Angela Carter. It is a collection of dark reinventions of classic fairy tales. Having just completed a children's picture book, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to create some sinister pieces of illustration. Below are my four entries for the competition as well as the passages that inspired each image.

What do you want for Christmas? Whilst drawing this image, I actually came to the conclusion that I would quite like a Christmas jumper...but would prefer a round the world plane ticket.

Pattern is becoming an increasingly important aspect of my artwork. This design would work well as a repeat pattern, perhaps as wrapping paper. However seeing all the different food and drink kind of puts me off the annual binge!

This is my forth book cover for the excellent publishing company, Summersdale. As with quite a few of my book covers, it depicts a scene from rural France. I should really go there in person sometime, as I have spent quite a long time researching all the different regions! One of my main aims with this project was to integrate as much texture as possible and I think I have got the balance about right.

Clothesline Clues to Jobs People DO!

It is almost finished! I've been working on a Children's book for the past few months and I'm at the tricky end stage when you stare at the work for a long time, attempting to spot any mistakes, before giving it to the printers. The concept of the book is quite a fun one; one page shows items of clothing belonging to a particular person, the next page reveals what profession that person has. Drawing astronauts, artists and farmers was a fun way to spend the summer months.

It should be out in the shops (in America) sometime next year. Here is a detail from one of the pages...he is a farmer!

It has been pretty busy these past few months. I'm currently working on several publishing commissions which should be finished soon. In need of a holiday, I recently went to Pembrokeshire for a week of camping by the sea, near St. Davids (Britain's smallest city). Below are a couple of photos I took whilst there, and evidence that I did do some drawing!

I recently completed my entry for the 'SPACE Exhibition' running in conjunction with the Cardiff Design Festival 2011. The quote is attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson and I picked it as I wanted to produce quite a melancholic response to the brief.

This is my entry for the 'They Draw and Travel' competition. I choose to depict my favourite American city, Boston, in a rather non-literal manner. I based the composition on two main features of the city: a map of the 'T' line (the rail network) and the 'Freedom Trail' (a red brick path around the city). My aim was to capture the fun and variety within this history-rich place and the colours offered by the green parks, brick buildings and the harbour. Here are a few close-up shots...

I produced this illustration for an article about a complicated merger between the government's adult and child services. I was trying to show how the links could benefit some individuals as they pass from childhood into adulthood, but also how some people could be lost in the system.

Fishing Boats

Following on from my tractor image where I revisited an old sketchbook drawing, I have produced another illustration based on my travels. I made the initial drawing two years ago, whilst in Cornwall. The patterns of the scene - made up of the boats bobbing up and down on the rippling water were what appealed to me most. I have used quite a bit of negative space with this image, which helps to depict the gentle motion of the water.

Andalucia Sketchbook

Last week I went to Seville and Cadiz for a few days and thoroughly enjoyed wandering around admiring the buildings and especially the beautiful tiles that adorn them. On the Sunday I came across one of the processions of Semana Santa (Holy Week). Seeing soldiers on horseback, leading scores of people dressed in long white robes who carried large candles and crosses, was quite a surreal experience. I managed to quickly sketch some of the action, and also made a drawing of a rather more subdued scene in Cadiz.

I have been meaning to produce this simple image for a long time; I found the rough sketch the other day, buried deep in one of my sketchbooks. The drawing was made whilst on a train going through the Cambridgeshire Fens several years ago. The contrasting pattern of the ploughed soil with the patchwork of fields in the distance, really appealed to me. I hope you like the resulting artwork...

I've just completed my entry for the A.O.I River Thames Competition. The brief was to celebrate the river and to show the wide variety of activities that take place on and around it. As I have walked a fair bit of the Thames Path myself and like to explore cities like London on foot, advertising this method of sightseeing seemed appropriate.

For my latest Caravan Club illustration, I was asked to depict the article writer, Shaun, asleep. Here he is, snoring loudly in his caravan whilst wrapped in his sleeping bag. You may ask why there is a drill on the floor, well; he was supposed to be doing some DIY when the urge for slumber got to him.

This beautiful piece of animation/puppetry/film shows the versatility of paper and light. I've been a fan of the use of cut paper in art ever since seeing the work of German silhouette animator Lotte Reiniger. This piece, like the work of Reiniger, is delicate and full of minute observations that draw the viewer into a fantastical fairy tale. Enjoy.

Nepal Artwork

Two pieces of my artwork have been selected for the Creative Quarterly Journal: my illustration of a father and child collecting a Christmas tree and a photograph I took whilst in Budapest. The latter image has been used for the cover of the journal and I am rather proud to be responsible for a graffiti face appearing on such a prestigious publication. I must point out that I did not draw the face, as that would be illegal, only photographed it! Perhaps photography should play a bigger part in my work in the future..?

I spent the majority of October hiking in the Nepalese Himalaya. I completed the Annapurna Circuit and in doing so passed through various beautiful and baffling villages whilst admiring the stunning mountain ranges. Here are a selection of my photographs and drawings made during the trip.

Autumn is my favourite season. I just caught the beginning of the famous New England Fall whilst out in Boston last month. As well as the turning leaves, pumpkins were everywhere! Halloween is a big deal across the pond, and I saw a number of houses decorated with these pumpkins, dried corn and other symbols of harvest time. I have a bit of a thing for autumnal colours so decided to create this piece in celebration of the season.

This is based on an Albert Camus quote and I think it sums up the season pretty well. I hope you like the quote and artwork. Happy Autumn.

Big Orange VW

This month's illustration for the Caravan Club Magazine is exactly that, a big orange VW. Apparently (according to the column writer) it had seen better days and was suffering from a fly infestation-nice!

A friend of mine recently (and rather tearfully) parted with her ancient VW. She had become best friends with the RAC repair truck and on more than one occasion the fire brigade paid her a visit whilst the van smoldered in the hard shoulder. But VW vans do look great and I enjoyed drawing this one.

Doodle Books and Maps

I seem to be getting more and more enquiries about creating doodle/colouring books for children. I guess it is the way I use scratchy line drawing that is attracting publishers. Well, I certainly like the idea of producing artwork with the aim of others contributing to it; a couple of years ago I produced three giant posters for the Greenbelt Festival. These black and white drawings were then adorned with crayon and paint by lots of children. My Masters Degree also involved interactivity and I designed and art directed the construction of a digital game that allowed viewers to create their own works of art, using elements drawn by me.

So here are two spreads of a doodle book that I produced this week with the lovely people at Buster Books. It was great to have a commission involving aliens!

It has been a rather busy week because as well as creating the above images I have been designing a couple of street scene 'maps' for an educational book. The idea is that students learning a language can describe the whereabouts of different objects in the image. Here is one of the designs that will be produced by Richmond Publishing (I am personally quite fond of the little dog by the burger bar).

Two Weeks in Boston

I've been spending some time in Boston doing a design internship with a great publishing company called Charlesbridge. I worked for them a couple of years ago illustrating a children's book called 'Truck Stuck'. The experience has been fantastic, I have learnt much more about the publishing industry as a whole, gained new skills using Quark and met several talented Illustrators. Many thanks to Susan Sherman, who is Charlesbridge's brilliant Art Director. She and the rest of the team went out of their way to make me feel very welcome.

I also manged to squeeze in a day's teaching at Rhode Island School of Design, which was both fun and inspiring. I shall soon be returning to my teaching role at Loughborough University and now have lots of new project ideas.

In between working at Charlesbridge and teaching I managed to go exploring around Boston and see the sights, here are a couple of my drawings:

Summertime

Put away your flip-flops and fill up the hot-water bottle, summer is over! I've been in a rather reflective mood lately and produced this image of a field full of daisies, poppies and dragonflies. I came across this view when on a long walk in August. It was scorching hot that day and so this image reminds me of a time when socks were not needed.

New Work for Tigerprint

The end of the academic year is always a busy period for me, sorting out exhibitions and marking work. Thankfully it is now the summer break and I have been able to spend more time on my Illustration work. I have been doing this whilst also moving home and setting up my new studio. Drawing at my desk, surrounded by boxes has been my daily routine as of late, so it was a nice change to do some in-house work at Tigerprint's lovely and spacious studio near the Yorkshire Dales. I was there for a week and worked on a variety of projects from packaging to calenders. The resulting artwork should be appearing in the shops some time in the next few months so keep your eyes peeled! Below is one of the card designs I was asked to produce.

I'm heading back up the M1 later this month to do some more work for Tigerprint and stay in the infamous cottage (a place where freelancers rest their weary head), so will show what I come up with when I get back.

Chart Toppers

I don't believe the saying, "Never judge a book by its cover". Ok, as an Illustrator my opinion is slightly biased but I know that a book with a bold and interesting cover design jumps out from the shelf to a prospective reader. So, judging by the latest Amazon chart figures, I must be doing something right. Books I have designed are now Third, Ninth and Twelfth place in the travel and holiday section chart.

It has been way too long since my last visit to the land of pancakes, bears and beautiful mountains-almost three years to be precise. With that in mind, I created this image to celebrate one of my favourite countries. I make no apologies for the use of stereotype in my artwork as often there is a reason for their existence as part of a country's image. For me Canada will always be a place where I ate an obscene amount of pancakes, came face to face with a bear (and survived) and got wobbly legs whilst looking down from the CN tower. Good memories :-)

Je t'aime a La Folie by Michael Wright

Another new book cover! This commission was one of my longer ones, but I think (and hope you agree) that it was worth the wait. Je t'aime a La Folie is the sequel to the successful book, C'est La Folie from best selling author, Michael Wright. I have been commissioned by several publishers for my depictions of 'romantic French countryside' and C'est La Folie was my first crack at this genre, so it is nice to finally complete the cover artwork for the sequel.

Cycling around London Town

Here is my entry for the Cycling 2010 competition launched by the London Transport Museum and the Association Of Illustrators-both of which are great organisations and do wonders for the promotion of Illustration. The brief was to depict cycling as an efficient and fun way to get around the city. I hope I have created an image which does exactly this, designing an alternative view of the morning rush hour. Keep your finger's crossed for me as there are a few prizes up for grabs with this competition.

Sweaty Tube Journeys

I've been spending quite a bit of time on the London Underground over the recent weeks-attending meetings and visiting friends. Despite being February and arctic conditions outside, the Tube is always a stuffy and humid affair which leaves me carrying a bundle of clothes, gloves and winter coats. My recent trips and previous experience of summertime rush hour inspired this image-I hope you like it.

I do think the Tube is fantastic and would much rather use it than battle my way through the London streets, but a little air conditioning would be nice. How about it Boris?!

New Book Cover For Summersdale Publishing

This is a brand new cover I created for Summersdale Publishing. As always, working with the design team was a great experience and I think the resulting cover-the sequel to Tout Sweet, is a success. An autobiographical account of Karen Wheeler's discovery of a new life in rural France, this book is an incite into the ups and downs of living the dream and escaping to the country. Give it a read, you'll love it.

It may be still a little early to have a spring clean but my latest illustration for Caravan Club Magazine reminded me of all the junk in my cupboards that needs to be skipped or assigned to my ebay pile.

The copy for this illustration focused on all the detritus that was discovered in the writer's caravan, and yes, that is a jar of Dolmio pasta sauce in the skip.

My latest illustration for Caravan Club Magazine focuses on a past trip made by the column writer to the Scottish Highlands. As you can see, his trip was a rather chilly one. Given the recent freezing weather, I'm very glad that I'm not in a caravan at the moment.

Truck Stuck

Last year I was commissioned by Charlesbridge Publishing to illustrate a humorous tale by author Sallie Wolfe.

The resulting book, following the calamitous events of a Truck that gets stuck in a viaduct has become an international success. It won the 'Early childhood NEWS Directors' Choice Award' and has been described as:

As well as being an Illustrator, I teach art and design at college and university level. One day, I used this clip as an example of good, simple, line animation. However, I think it freaked out alot of my students. I love Hertzfeldt's work because of his superb comic timing and rather macabre storylines.

Mail Me Art

'Mail Me Art' encourages artists to challenge the postal service by decorating envelopes and packages whilst not effecting the readability of the delivery address. I submitted two design, incorporating the address into the composition of each image.

Luckily both of these envelopes reached 'Mail me Art' HQ and were featured in a recent exhibition at the Red Gate Gallery, London. Have a look.

A book recording all of the submissions has also been published. One of my designs (the Gorilla image) features on the front cover of the book. You can order it online here.

Talented Friends

The Caravan Club

Although the idea of pulling a huge white plastic box behind a car whilst traveling at 70 mph may fill some people with dread, there is a club that find this activity deeply enjoyable. The Caravan Club magazine have been commissioning me for almost three years now to illustrate a column that investigates this pursuit, warts and all. Being somebody who is not adverse to "roughing it" in a campsite surrounded by the flora and fauna, I have experienced many of the positives and occasional negatives of "caravanning".

Each month I receive an amusing column of text which I thoroughly enjoy illustrating. I have lost count of how many caravans I have drawn over the years and think I can safely say that I'm an expert caravan/campervan Illustrator. Here are some of my most recent efforts:

I did this painting for a Dutch Publisher who had previously commissioned me to design a book cover for a new title called "Bonjour Nederland". She seemed very happy with the result and sent me this photo - I really like her candlestick holder!
